How to protect susceptible patients against caries
You are well acquainted with the situation: Every day you see patients who are highly susceptible to developing caries. You would like to help them in the best possible way. In these cases fluoride is your “go-to” solution. Fluoride inhibits demineralization and stimulates remineralization of the tooth structure. Find out more about how special protective varnish systems containing fluoride can provide multiple protection – efficiently and in one step – in cases where the caries risk is very high.
Sometimes fluoride is not enough
Fluoride cannot take effect properly in every case. If the equilibrium of the oral microflora is disturbed because of an increase in acid-producing microorganisms, the effectiveness of fluoride will reach its limits. It hardly stands a chance if high and frequent acid production occurs in the mouth.
So what can be done? – Additional components are necessary!
In these situations, additional components, such as chlorhexidine, are required, which help to control the number of offending germs. When the danger of excessive acid production has subsided, fluoride can take effective more easily.
Two steps in one
In such cases, it is advisable to use a protective varnish that combines fluoridation and germ control in one product, for example, Cervitec F. The product contains fluoride plus chlorhexidine plus cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). These components are completely dissolved in the preparation. As a result, the varnish is immediately ready for use. In addition, it can be dispensed in controlled amounts. The product is characterized by excellent wetting and flow properties. Therefore, it readily flows into hard-to-reach problem areas and into porous tooth structure.

Swift application
The protective varnish is applied easily and quickly: After the teeth have been cleaned, a dry working field is created by using cotton rolls, cotton swabs or if needed a saliva ejector, or air syringe. The moisture tolerance of the varnish is relatively high. A fine coating of the clear, colourless Cervitec F is applied. This layer dries within one minute and then the cotton rolls can be removed. The mouth should not be rinsed after the application. Since the varnish has a mild taste, these instructions are easy to follow. Patients should refrain from eating and drinking for one hour after the application.
The protective varnish is usually applied every three-months. If necessary, it can be used at shorter intervals.
The solution for special challenges
The swift application protocol of Cervitec F is suitable for use in susceptible patients of any age and in situations when time is of the essence. The varnish is ideal for use in field conditions, where dental practice equipment is not available – for example, in homes for the retired or in facilities for people with special needs as well as in hospitals and on house calls. The varnish system can be used as a basic preventive measure against caries and hypersensitive teeth.
Tip: Prepare the teeth for the application by professionally cleaning them
Depending on the conditions at hand, the teeth should either be professionally cleaned (for example with a prophy paste such as Proxyt) or simply cleaned with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Paste residue must be rinsed off completely so that the varnish will properly adhere to the teeth.
The free sample is only available to persons living in Europe (EU/EFTA countries), Australia and New Zealand.
