IPS Style: highly efficient and esthetic
Gérald Ubassy is one of the most accomplished dental laboratory technicians in France. His work has attained international acclaim. He has been running a successful dental laboratory business in Provence since 1982, where he specializes in metal-ceramic techniques and the manufacture of fixed denture prosthetics.
In the following interview Gérald Ubassy describes his experiences with the new IPS Style metal-ceramic material.
Mr Ubassy, you are specialized in using ceramic materials. How would you describe the new IPS Style metal-ceramic material?
Gérald Ubassy: IPS Style has some very unique characteristics. I would like to mention just two of these here. Firstly, the materials are very easy to use, whether you are layering or sculpting a restoration. Secondly, the ceramic is highly esthetic. This is the feature by which patients judge the result – and therefore it is very important.
IPS Style was launched on the market in October 2015. You were one of the few dental technicians who were given the opportunity to work with the product before it was officially introduced. What observations did you make at that time?
Gérald Ubassy: IPS Style layers easily and it is very stable, even after several firing cycles. I immediately noticed that the material showed minimal shrinkage. The contours that I had built up remained unchanged. At the same time, the ceramic looked amazing.
Is there one aspect that is particularly noteworthy for you?

Gérald Ubassy: I love the wide range of Impulse materials, which allow me to produce a lot of different effects. In addition, I do not have to worry about different shade systems because the colours of the IPS Style materials, the IPS e.max all-ceramics and the light-curing SR Nexco laboratory composite all match. Consequently, IPS Style can be combined with other materials such as IPS e.max without any problems. One shade system makes life so much easier.
How has the product changed the way you work?
Gérald Ubassy: Because it is easy to use, I can work more efficiently. I am able to sculpt the material quickly and easily. Since the material is uncomplicated to apply and shows only minimal shrinkage, it saves me a lot of time. This is a great improvement.
