The secret of the invisible framework
“Metal-ceramic esthetics without borders” – this is the heading of a fascinating case about the new IPS Style metal-ceramic. Dental technician Florin Stoboran from Romania gives an example of how he uses this material. Since 1996, he has been running his own dental lab in Oradea, focussing on esthetic dentistry and all-ceramics.
What is at issue?
For several years now, the trend to nutrition- and stress-induced abrasion, erosion and other dental defects has been increasing in many people. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced among the less-than-30-year olds who have a preference for carbonated acidic beverages. In the case presented here, Florin Stoboran and his team decided on a metal-ceramic treatment option. They felt that this provided the best approach to solve this challenging case.
The second part of this case is described below:
Picture gallery: that’s how the expert works!
I used IPS Style Ceram Mamelon yellow-orange in the palatal areas and IPS Style Ceram Occlusal Dentin orange in the incisal and lateral areas to produce a natural-looking result.
I applied an ultrathin colour layer of IPS Style Ceram Mamelon yellow-orange and IPS Style Ceram Mamelon light to the dentin lobes on the vestibular aspect. The materials were mixed in a 1:1 ratio before they were used.
Eagerly anticipated: the results of the first dentin firing cycle. Due to the low shrinkage of the ceramic only minimal adjustments had to be made. The layered contours remained unchanged, which was particularly important in the incisal and lateral areas.
The youthful appearance of the cusps and fissures corresponds to the age of the patient. The steep inclines were maintained during the firing process.
The play of light seeming to come from within the restoration and the colour blend of the single restorations thoroughly satisfied the dental team.
With the help of a gold varnish, the surface texture and structure of the teeth was checked and carefully finalized.
The stains of the universal range of Stain and Glaze materials from the IPS Ivocolor assortment impart a very lifelike appearance to the macro and micro texture of the restoration. Based on shade A2, a final outcome of A3 can be produced and A3.5 in the cervical area.
The staining materials used reflect light from deep within the restoration – in contrast to opaque ceramic powders. The result looks very natural. The posterior teeth with the mesio-palatal Carabelli’s cusps and the stained fissures also look vital.
Winning line-up: The final result after glaze firing and preliminary polishing
Problem solved: The happy patient’s smile has been given a new lease on life.
