A fascinating case of using IPS Style

“Metal-ceramic esthetics without borders“ – this is the heading of a fascinating case about the new IPS Style metal-ceramic. Dental technician Florin Stoboran from Romania gives an example of how he uses this material. Since 1996, he has been running his own dental lab in Oradea, focusing on esthetic dentistry and all-ceramics.

What is at issue?

For several years now, the trend to nutrition-and stress-induced abrasion, erosion and other dental defects has been increasing in many people. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced among the less-than-30-year olds who have a preference for carbonated acidic beverages. In the case presented here, Florin Stoboran and his treatment team decided on a metal-ceramic treatment option. They felt that this provided the best approach to solve this challenging case.

Severe dental defects, generalized chronic hypersensitivities and lack of esthetics caused this 27-year-old patient to seek dental advice. See for yourself how Florin Stoboran restored the dentition of this young male using IPS Style, a newly developed metal-ceramic material combining leucite, fluorapatite and oxyapatite:

Preoperative situation: sensitivity caused by several carious lesions requiring treatment. Completely broken off crown on tooth 13. Teeth 14, 15, 23 to 25, 33, 34, 37, 43 to 45, 47 fractured with loss of tooth structure and, in some cases, exposure of the pulp. Teeth 36 and 46 were missing. We opted for a metal-ceramic solution based on IPS Style: single crowns plus small bridges in the mandible.

Following endodontic treatment and periodontal therapy, temporaries were placed and the patient underwent a three-month regeneration phase.

The teeth were prepared to create an appropriate initial situation for the final prosthetic restoration.

The maxillary single crowns were cast using a conventional method and then carefully finished. Once the oxide firing process was complete, a wash-opaquer layer was applied using IPS Style Ceram Intensive Powder Opaquer.                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Like the foundation layer, the covering layer resulted in a homogeneous surface. No microporosities were noticeable. Using a dry brush, small amounts of IPS Style Ceram Deep Dentin and IPS Style Ceram Margin were applied to the second opaquer layer before the second firing. This method allows us to take full advantage of the optical properties of IPS Style. After about two minutes, the drying process commences. Once the excess was tapped off, the second opaquer firing was conducted.

In contrast to the customary procedure, IPS Style Ceram Deep Dentin was applied up to the central third. I created the dentin lobes already at this stage. If this procedure is used, Deep Dentin is the first body material and assists in building up an ideal anatomical shape. This is possible because of the favourable translucent properties of IPS Style.

I built up the full contour using IPS Style Ceram Dentin. Like all the other components of the IPS Style system, these materials are also very easy to apply and provide a homogenous surface. Additionally, I applied small amounts of IPS Style Ceram Cervical Transpa to the cervical area to add dynamism to the restoration.

After the restorations were built up to full contour, they were cut back in a targeted fashion to meet the individual requirements of the patient. Given the high stability of the materials, any design can be achieved easily and efficiently.
